Our Purpose

The Primary Care Academy provides information and resources, promotes opportunities and co-ordinates educational activities to Primary Care teams, educators, and supervisors so that the Primary Care workforce have the skills and training to meet the healthcare needs of the people in Southwest England.

Who we are

Get to know the faces behind the Primary Care Academy.

  • Director

    Dr Linda Simpson

    Linda has been a GP  Cornwall since 2000, is a GP trainer and an Examiner with the Royal College of General practitioners.

    She is also Associate Dean for HEE’s School of Primary Care in Cornwall.

    She lives in a small village between Truro and Falmouth, with a husband and a dog and tries to spend as much time in Cornwall’s outdoors as possible.

  • General Practice Fellowship Lead

    Dr William Edney

    I am a GP partner working in a rural practice in Mid Devon. I’m actively involved in medical education and work as a training programme director at the Exeter VTS. I enjoy supervising trainee doctors and medical students in practice, and I’ve also worked with Technology enhanced learning and as a SPEX tutor. I completed my medical training in Leicester before I made the move to the southwest to undertake my GP training.

    Outside of work I enjoy spending time with my three children and enjoying the great Devon Countryside. I like mountain biking, walking, running and attempting watersports.

  • Health Inequalities Lead

    Dr Daniel Korn

    I completed my medical training in Brighton in 2009. I then did a diploma in tropical medicine in East Africa and spent the next two years working in rural South Africa where I met my wife. We then travelled across Southern Africa in my yellow 4×4 to Malawi where we ran a remote clinic for a year before returning to the UK in 2015 to start GP training in Plymouth. I qualified as GP in 2019.

    I have completed additional training in palliative care and spent a year working in hospices in Plymouth and back in Malawi. I have interests in managing patients with chronic pain and complex lives and working on projects to improve delivery of healthcare for our most vulnerable populations. I have additional roles developing projects to support recruitment and training in primary care with a focus on Health Inequalities through Devon Training Hub. I have completed post-graduate studies in medical education and enjoy teaching on the Foundation Medicine program at Peninsula Medical school.

    I live just outside Plymouth with my wife and young family and enjoy tennis, travelling and the outdoors.

  • Project Manager

    Deirdre Philliips

    Hello, I’m Deirdre Phillips, Project Manager at the South West Primary Care Academy

    I joined the Primary Care Academy in August 2020, my role involves maintaining an overview of the broad range of projects undertaken within PCA to retain and up skill the current primary care workforce I enjoy supporting all members of the team in developing and implementing the PCA objectives.

    Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my husband and son, travelling and dog sitting.

  • Regional Administrator

    Jude Banyard

    Hello, I’m Jude Banyard, the Regional Administrator for the South West Primary Care Academy.

    Before undertaking this role, I had previously been a Medical Secretary within the NHS for approximately 21 years.  Since joining the PCA team I have gained an insight into all the different professions within Primary Care, along with the chance to support the PCA team.

    Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, as well as camping, cooking and walking.

  • FCP Project Manager

    Emma Kyle

    Emma is a First Contact Practitioner (FCP) Project Manager and will be supporting the SW Primary Care Academy to enhance the support offered to FCP’s and Supervisors in their roles so they can continue to provide safe and effective patient care.

    Emma is a Registered Mental Health Nurse whose clinical experience lays alongside working with children and young people with significant mental health difficulties. Emma’s previous experience involved leading a project whereby she offered leadership, training and education to a team of professionals which allowed them to provide additional mental health support to the public.

    Emma lives in South Devon where she enjoys all aspects of its natural beauty which includes hobbies like hiking, swimming, surfing and exploring new places with her much loved Labrador.

  • FCP Education Lead

    Lily Dixon

    I am the Southwest First Contact Practitioner Education lead and my role is to develop regional support for colleagues who are entering primary care and training for a FCP role as well as providing support for supervisors of these role. I am passionate about developing our FCP workforce and highlighting the different roles and their benefit within a multi-disciplinary team.

    I am a Paramedic by background and have experience of working across a variety of clinical and educational roles including as an Advanced Clinical Practitioner in Primary and Unscheduled Care for the last 5 years.

    My other passions outside of work include travel and learning about new cultures and cuisines

  • Project Administrator

    Michelle Jones

    Hello, I’m Michelle Jones, the Project Administrator for the Southwest Primary Care Academy.
    My career has been varied and fulfilling.  I lived in Berkshire and worked for British Airways, firstly flying longhaul out of Heathrow and then as a Training Officer, training pilots and cabin crew in safety procedures.  I then moved to Devon with my husband and joined a Telecommunications company as their General Manager.
    After having my daughter, I went to university and trained as a teacher, working in a private school for twelve years.  The last two years, I have worked at a local college teaching apprentices Functional Skills.
    I live in a beautiful seaside town in Devon with my husband and daughter.  We love nothing more than spending time on the beach.
