Primary Care Supervision

What is Supervision

Supervision provides safe opportunities to share, explore and resolve practice uncertainties, usually within a defined training pathway (such as University supported post graduate education).

It is:

  • the cornerstone of professional and public safety;
  • an integral part of healthcare for all levels of practice across the workforce; focused on maintaining and promoting professional and public safety through continuous professional learning.

All registered health professionals are expected to understand the purpose of and engage in supervision and continuous professional development. Employers also have responsibilities for ensuring adequate supervision and training for their employees.

Ten generic Capabilities have been highlighted for multiprofessional supervision to enable effective support of trainees in work-based settings, detailed here: Advanced Practice Supervisor Capabilities – Advanced Practice (hee.nhs.uk).

Dimensions of Supervisor Capability

Supervisors are required to self-assess their own generic capabilities in addition to their understanding of specific training pathways they plan to support.
