Multi-professional Modular Supervisor Course (MMSC)
Overview
Module 1&2
Modules 1&2 are generic modules. They introduce the key elements of supervision of learners in primary care, consultation skills teaching and learning from case discussion in clinical practice. They are recommended to all who are new to primary care supervision. They are compulsory for those wishing to supervise GP trainees.
Each module is a half day on-line, delivered in small groups.
Modules 3
Modules 3 are specific to who you want to supervise. Entry criteria apply to each.
Module 3a is for GPs wishing to become a GP Clinical Supervisor for GP trainees, Foundation Drs or Retained Drs.
To become an Educational Supervisor then complete modules 4&5 as well.
3b is for professionals wishing to supervise First Contact Practitioners
3c is for professionals wishing to supervise Advanced Clinical Practitioners

Learning Outcomes: Module 1*
- Overview of course

Learning Outcomes: Module 2*
- Mainly focused on helping learners develop their consultations and introduce case-based discussion as a learning and assessment tool
- Difference between 1’ and 2’ care consultations
- Tools for use in teaching consultations
- Introduction to use of assessments as teaching and benchmarking tools
- Assessing capabilities
- Doing a COT and a CBD. Giving feedback
- Learners experiencing difficulties
- Supervisor wellbeing
Module 3c-AP: Supervising a Trainee Advanced Practitioner
By the end of this course supervisors should be able to:
- Explain Advanced Practice concepts including Advanced Practice supervisor standards, pillars of practice, the level of capability and autonomy expected of Advanced Practitioners and governance using up to date local and national resources.
- Support and maintain trainee well-being by recognising their experienced Registered Professional status, augmenting their skills during a transition to Advanced Practice level.
- Coach a trainee to identify learning needs which align to both higher education MSc content and advanced practice work-based service provision.
- Assist with creating development opportunities relevant to a trainee’s workplace role.
- Coach a trainee Advanced Practitioner to build a work-based advanced practice portfolio relevant to MSc level course content and workplace role.
- Explain the importance of interpreting MSc level course content to support trainees with applying theoretical knowledge in the workplace.
- Recognise the importance of organisational cultural considerations for Advanced Practice specifically addressing trainee imposter syndrome and wider team development/integration.
Utilise learning outcomes 1-7 to evaluate and appraise a trainee’s ability to deliver an Advanced Practice level service.
* If formal core supervisor training is needed (based on self-assessment of skills vs module learning outcomes)
Supervising an Advanced Practitioner
- Supervisors of Advanced Practice Trainees can complete Module 1 , 2 & 3c.
- Module 3c provides professional development in line with National Guidance for those planning to Supervise Advanced Practice Trainees
- Completing modules 1-3 in a linear manner is recommended but not essential.
Module 3c-AP can be used as a refresher or standalone professional development. You are not required to complete Module 1+2 if the following entry criteria is met, based on self assessment of your own learning needs.
Module 3c Entry Criteria:
You must be an experienced GP
OR
Advanced practitioner with a minimum of three year’s post MSc experience
AND
Have (or plan to) complete formal supervisor development*
*Examples include: Clinical Educator Programmes; PgCert in Clinical Education; Practice Educator programmes; local supervisor training course
Module 1 + 2 of the MMSC
OR
You are a member of the Primary Care team interested in supporting a Co-ordinating Advanced Practice Supervisor as an Associate Supervisor*
*Associate supervisors must demonstrate expert knowledge and capability of the area of practice they are supervising.
PLEASE NOTE:
Individuals named as Co-ordinating Educational Supervisors with the SW Faculty of Advanced Practice will be offered priority spaces on this course.
