Module 3b-FCP: Supervising a First Contact Practitioner
Modules 3 are specific to who you want to supervise. Entry criteria apply to each
- Module 3a is for GPs wishing to become a GP Clinical Supervisor for GP trainees, Foundation Drs or Retained Drs.
- To become an Educational Supervisor then complete modules 4&5 as well.
- 3b is for professionals wishing to supervise First Contact Practitioners.
- 3c is for professionals wishing to supervise Advanced Clinical Practitioners.
Module 1: Introduction to primary care supervision*
Modules 1&2 are generic modules. They introduce the key elements of supervision of learners in primary care, consultation skills teaching and learning from case discussion in clinical practice. They are recommended to all who are new to primary care supervision. They are compulsory for those wishing to supervise GP trainees.
Each module is a half day on-line, delivered in small groups.
Module 2: Consultation skills teaching and learning through case discussion*
Modules 1&2 are generic modules. They introduce the key elements of supervision of learners in primary care, consultation skills teaching and learning from case discussion in clinical practice. They are recommended to all who are new to primary care supervision. They are compulsory for those wishing to supervise GP trainees.
Each module is a half day on-line, delivered in small groups.
*Replacing the old 2-day RMSV course
First Contact Practitioner (FCP) Supervisors can complete Module 1+2 (or equivalent supervising training) followed by Module 3b-FCP. Those who meet the criteria below do not need to repeat Module 1+2 and can use Module 3b-FCP as standalone professional development or a refresher.
Ideally, those who require formal supervisor training should complete Module 1+2 prior to Module 3b-FCP. However, the modules do not need to be completed in a strictly linear fashion.
It’s important to note that this course isn’t compulsory for those supervising trainee First Contact Practitioners through a University pathway but serves as supplementary support for current or prospective supervisors. Please consult with the trainee’s University regarding their supervisor eligibility criteria. This course replaces the previous 2-day Roadmap Supervisor course (RMSV).
Entry Criteria Module 3b-FCP:
Be an experienced GP or Advanced practitioner or verified First Contact practitioner with a minimum of one year’s experience in post
AND
Experienced or actively practicing in the area they intend to supervise.
AND
Have completed some formal supervisor development.
Examples of formal training include: Clinical educator programmes; PgCert in clinical education; practice educator programmes; local supervisor training course
Module 1 + 2 of the MMSC.
